Throughout my career, I’ve consistently demonstrated my ability to deliver groundbreaking digital programs and tangible solutions while building productive relationships across all organizational levels. Most recently, for Patients Rising, a patient education, support and advocacy group, I led the development of an innovative online community anchored with engaging video courses, designed to empower patients and caregivers in self- and legislative advocacy.
I’m the founder and principal of Joe Keenan Consulting, a practice I established to help organizations leverage program and business applications for greater impact. I also help nonprofits collect and amplify constituent stories through my StoryLab Connect framework. My entrepreneurial ventures showcase my commitment to helping organizations navigate the complex digital landscape while maintaining a focus on human-centered storytelling.
Prior to my current positions, I served as EVP Director of Digital Product Development at Partnership to End Addiction (formerly the Partnership for a Drug-Free America) from 1999 to 2012. My work there earned multiple prestigious recognitions, including a Webby nomination in Family/Parenting for Drugfree.org and a Webby Honoree distinction for the Hope, Help, Healing intervention program.
My earlier career included significant roles at Reuters (formerly Thomson Reuters) where I rose to Senior Vice President of Marketing at Thomson Financial Publishing, and at Wiley (formerly John Wiley & Sons) where I progressed through various editorial and marketing positions. This diverse background has given me a comprehensive understanding of both traditional and digital media landscapes.
As a systems thinker at heart, I excel at connecting dots across organizations and implementing effective solutions. I’ve led numerous successful implementations of marketing and fundraising systems for nonprofit clients, including CRM, customer support, digital asset management, and grassroots advocacy platforms. My expertise extends to analytics and optimization, where I’ve implemented cutting-edge tools to measure campaign and content performance through custom dashboards and segmentation reports.
My collaborative approach and dedication to knowledge sharing are evident in my work developing tutorials and workshops on content strategy, ROI, SEO, and CRM usage. I’ve been particularly successful in helping organizations establish efficient workflows and project management practices, implementing tools like Basecamp, Trello, Slack, Google Workplace, Clickup, and Monday.com.
My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and English from Rutgers University, complemented by executive education through IBM’s Adaptive Enterprise Program and Columbia University’s Management Development and Executive Marketing programs. I maintain professional involvement through membership in NTEN and continue to give back to the community through volunteer work, including serving as a strategic communications consultant to the Hudson Area Library Campaign.
Colleagues and clients consistently praise my ability to combine strategic thinking with practical execution. As Jenny Song, Director Digital at Cancer Support Community, notes, “Joe is a strategic and creative thinker but also excels at execution. His expertise in analytics, analysis, and optimization have helped us identify opportunities and leverage our digital investments and assets.”
I divide my time between Northville, NY and Chicago, IL, continuing to drive digital innovation in the nonprofit sector while maintaining my commitment to patient advocacy and organizational effectiveness.
